Game Changer The Technoscientific Revolution in Sports

We like to think of sports as elemental: strong bodies trained to overcome height, weight, distance; the thrill of earned victory or the agony of defeat in a contest decided on a level playing field. But in Game Changer, Rayvon Fouché argues that sports have been radically shaped by an explosion of scientific and technological advances in materials, training, nutrition, and medicine dedicated to making athletes stronger and faster. Technoscience, as Fouché dubs it, increasingly gives the edge (however slight) to the athlete with the latest gear, the most advanced training equipment, or the performance-enhancing drugs that are hardest to detect. In this revealing book, Fouché examines a variety of sports paraphernalia and enhancements, from fast suits, athletic shoes, and racing bicycles to basketballs and prosthetic limbs. He also takes a hard look at gender verification testing, direct drug testing, and the athlete biological passport in an attempt to understand the evolving place of technoscience across sport. In this book, Fouché: • Examines the relationship among sport, science, and technology • Considers what is at stake in defining sporting culture by its scientific knowledge and technology • Provides readers and students with an informative and engagingly written study Focusing on well-known athletes, including Michael Phelps, Oscar Pistorius, Caster Semenya, Usain Bolt, and Lance Armstrong, Fouché argues that technoscience calls into question the integrity of games, records, and our bodies themselves. He also touches on attempts by sporting communities to regulate the use of technology, from elite soccer’s initial reluctance to utilize goal-line technology to automobile racing’s endless tweaking of regulatory formulas in an attempt to blur engineering potency and reclaim driver skill and ability. Game Changer will change the way you look at sports―and the outsized impact technoscience has on them.

Driving Lessons: A Father, A Son, and the Healing Power of Golf

When Steve Friedman was a child growing up in the suburbs of St. Louis, the game of golf was, to him, mysterious and dark. His father's passion for it caused friction in his marriage and eluded the interest of his youngest son, who was devoted instead to basketball. For that and many other reasons, the two failed to bond, ultimately leading to an awkward and unhappy relationship. But Friedman never forgot the love his father had for golf, and after many years, when he was in his forties, he reached out and asked his dad to teach him the game. He thought that perhaps he could learn something about his old man's view of life and thereby find a way to communicate with him. This small volume is the sweet yet unsentimental story of that experience—the tale of two men using the game of golf to find a way to connect with each other across decades of disagreement and misunderstanding. For anyone who is a golfer, a father, or a son, this book will be a treasure.

Long Shots: Jay Wright, Villanova, and College Basketball's Most Unlikely Champion

31 years after the Perfect Game – Villanova’s shocking national championship upset over Georgetown – Nova struck again with the Perfect Shot, taking down North Carolina in one of the most thrilling finishes in sports history. The shot and second national title in school history were the culmination of 15 years of Coach Jay Wright painstakingly building the unheralded program, through ups and downs, heartbreak and triumph. In Long Shots: Jay Wright, Villanova, and College Basketball’s Most Unlikely Champion, ESPN senior writer Dana O’Neil uses exclusive access to Coach Wright and Nova basketball to delve into the inner-workings of a championship program. In the spirit of A Season on the Brink, O’Neil not only explores behind-the-scenes of the historic 2015-2016 NCAA championship season but also the improbable path that the Nova program took to college basketball immortality. In overcoming a disappointing NCAA Tournament track record, the breakup of the Big East conference as we knew it, and Nova’s underdog status among traditional college hoops powerhouses, Jay Wright and his team provided the blueprint for how a “have-not” can prevail over the blue bloods the right way – the Villanova Basketball Way.

42 Seconds: The Jesus Model for Everyday Interactions

The average length of Jesus' conversations as recorded in the Gospels was 42 seconds long. This is good news for all of us. It frees us up to talk about the most important part of our lives in a way that's natural, meaningful, and helpful instead of clumsy, awkward, and irrelevant. Anyone who has spent countless uncomfortable hours walking from house to house with a clipboard or flash cards that talk about four spiritual laws understands. Jesus' conversations were remarkably simple. Contemporary Christian lingo has set up a dichotomy between what we call "discipleship" and "evangelism," but the Bible doesn't do that. Jesus had conversations all the time with those who thought they were close to God, as well as with those who deemed themselves lost and without hope. He invited all of them to come and learn from Him. 42 Seconds is a simple book that uses the ordinary moments of our lives the way Jesus used the same moments in his own. The premise is straightforward: If we can learn from Jesus how to have great conversations, it will change our lives and the lives of those around us. Its four-part structure, including five short chapters per section, is for churches and small groups to engage with the practical ideas together. 42 Seconds includes discussion questions to help groups and individuals implement Jesus' natural rhythm of interaction in their own lives.

Ayurveda cookbook An Ayurvedic Recipes To Improve Holistic Health, Welness And Relieve Stress

Welcome to Ayurveda Cookbook: Ayurvedic Recipes to Improve Holistic Health, Wellness, and Relieve Stress. The Ayurvedic diet was developed thousands of years ago using diligent observation and study by the monks of India. They were the first to connect the body type to the diet that best supports it. If you are completely new to Ayurveda, you should know that it divides people into three main types. Everyone is usually dominated by the energy (dosha) of one type, with another type as your secondary ayurvedic type. To find out which you are, please review the below descriptions: Vata types tend to be: Quick-learners; Forgetful; Poor circulation, resulting in cold hands and feet; Moody; Bursts of tremendous energy in small spurts; Impulsive; Dry hair and skin; Scatterbrained; Quick thinker, but often have thoughts going in all directions; Lack of daily routine; On the tall side; Thin build; Moves quickly when walking; Joyful and enthusiastic when at their best; and lastly, fearful, anxious, worried, and fretful when under stress. Pitta type tend to be: Competitive; Organized; Medium/Strong build; "Hangry" when they miss a meal; Fair-haired and fair-skinned: Sensitive to hot environments; Self-confident, assertive, and able to direct others well; Aggressive and demanding when under stress (to the point of temper tantrums); Suffer from skin blemishes (acne, skin cancer, Etc.); Great at public speaking; Good concentration; Impatient; Struggles with anger; Insomniacs; Sufferers of heartburn; and lastly, great natural leaders. Kapha types tend to be: Affectionate and accepting; Forgiving; Reliable; Heavy, but strong build; Quick to listen and slow to speak; Patient; Slow-paced and gentle; Prone to slow digestion; Depressed; Possessive (to the point of hoarding when under stress); Extremely calm; A steadfast anchor; Soft hair and skin; Long-term memory; Prone to respiratory ailments; Prone to have hardened arteries; Generally in good health; and lastly, a peacekeeper. If you are still confused about your type, don't worry. Most of the recipes I have chosen will work for any ayurvedic type. There are plenty of quizzes and resources available online and in your local bookstore. In the remainder of this book, we will cover recipes from breakfast to dinner, and everything in between. You are sure to find a recipe to entice your taste buds, regardless of whether you are brand new to this diet or if it has been your way of life for many, many years. Enjoy!
