The AlveoConsistograph Handbook, 2nd Edition

The AlveoConsistograph helps you to classify, control, and select wheat and flour and optimize their blending for specific rheological properties. It measures the effects of improvers, ingredients, and other additives resulting in better control of dough on the production line and more consistent end-product quality. The AlveoConsistograph Handbook, Second Edition provides an understanding of the technical data generated by the instrument and gives timely application examples. It explains the workings of the Chopin Consistograph and provides a deep insight into its coupling with the Chopin Alveograph. This is the first revision of this resource in 20 years and it explains major modifications and improvements of the Alveograph through new and completely revised chapters. A new chapter on the Consistograph, the component that is used to determine the water absorption capacity of flour, includes test procedures, applications, differences from other devices, maintenance, and troubleshooting. Another new chapter discusses the debate surrounding the testing of samples, using either constant water content or constant consistency methods. This chapter gives useful insight into the adapted hydrated Alveograph protocol and its benefits for users of flour that will be part of formulations where gluten quality and performance is crucial. It covers the controversial subject in depth, the technical basis for the development of the debate, and compares the use of both methods on the same wheat. In addition to wheat flour, the book provides guidance for using the Alveograph on additional products like durum wheat semolina or durum pasta. All chapters have been re-written to include the latest practices and will help users gain a better understanding of how this important technology is used in today s food labs. This large format, easy-to-read handbook includes two helpful appendixes: The first lists the main alveograph parts and the second lists selected references concerning the alveograph. The Alveoconsistograph Handbook will provide every user, all along the cereal chain, with up-to-date information helping them to get the most out of their daily use of this important technology. It will be especially useful for food scientists in the baking industry, quality control laboratories, suppliers of enzymes and additives, breeders, grain scientists involved with grain storage, as well as grain exporters. Topics Covered Include: Description of different alveograph types Theory of the alveograph Description of the alveograph procedure Modification of the alveograph procedure Interpretation of the alveograph results Factors influencing the alveograph Alveograph calibration Description of the consistograph Adapted hydration method for the alveograph Troubleshooting

Solar Silicon Processes: Technologies, Challenges, and Opportunities

Polycrystalline silicon (commonly called "polysilicon") is the material of choice for photovoltaic (PV) applications. Polysilicon is the purest synthetic material on the market, though its processing through gas purification and decomposition (commonly called "Siemens" process) carries high environmental risk. While many current optoelectronic applications require high purity, PV applications do not and therefore alternate processes and materials are being explored for PV grade silicon. Solar Silicon Processes: Technologies, Challenges, and Opportunities reviews current and potential future processing technologies for PV applications of solar silicon. It describes alternative processes and issues of material purity, cost, and environmental impact. It covers limits of silicon use with respect to high-efficiency solar cells and challenges arising from R&D activities. The book also defines purity requirements and purification processes of metallurgical grade silicon (MG-Si) and examines production of solar grade silicon by novel processes directly from MG-Si and/or by decomposition of silane gas in a fluidized bed reactor (FBR). Furthermore, the book: Analyzes past research and industrial development of low-cost silicon processes in view of understanding future trends in this field. Discusses challenges and probability of success of various solar silicon processes. Covers processes that are more environmentally sensitive. Describes limits of silicon use with respect to high-efficiency solar cells and challenges arising from R&D activities. Defines purity requirements and purification processes of MG-Si. Examines production of solar grade silicon directly from MG-Si.

Bring Out The Dog
Bring Out The Dog Sented by Paul

"A near-miraculous, brilliant debut."-George Saunders, Man Booker Prize-winning author of Lincoln in the Bardo "In one exquisitely crafted story after the next, Will Mackin maps the surreal psychological terrain of soldiers in a perpetual war."-Phil Klay, National Book Award-winning author of Redeployment The eleven stories in Will Mackin's mesmerizing debut collection draw from his many deployments with a special operations task force in Iraq and Afghanistan. They began as notes he jotted on the inside of his forearm in grease pencil and, later, as bullet points on the torn-off flap of an MRE kit. Whenever possible he incorporated those notes into his journals. Years later, he used those journals to write this book. Together, the stories in Bring Out the Dog offer a remarkable portrait of the absurdity and poetry that define life in the most elite, clandestine circles of modern warfare. It is a world of intense bonds, ancient credos, and surprising compassion-of success, failure, and their elusive definitions. Moving between settings at home and abroad, in vivid language that reflects the wonder and discontent of war, Mackin draws the reader into a series of surreal, unsettling, and deeply human episodes: In "Crossing the River No Name," a close call suggests that miracles do exist, even if they are in brutally short supply; in "Great Circle Route Westward Through Perpetual Night," the death of the team's beloved dog plunges them into a different kind of grief; in "Kattekoppen," a man struggles to reconcile his commitments as a father and his commitments as a soldier; and in "Baker's Strong Point," a man whose job it is to pull things together struggles with a loss of control. Told without a trace of false bravado and with a keen, Barry Hannah-like sense of the absurd, Bring Out the Dog manages to capture the tragedy and heroism, the degradation and exultation, in the smallest details of war. Advance praise for Bring Out the Dog "Good stories that deal with war must deal with the extremes of war: heroic altruism and murderous selfishness, piercing beauty and disgusting ugliness. Mackin hits all the notes and all the notes sound true. These stories are right at the top with the best I've ever read."-Karl Marlantes, New York Times bestselling author of Matterhorn: A Novel of the Vietnam War
