Momotaro

This is one of a number (13 confirmed but probably 18) of books in the same format. They are all crepe paper and very small size for a Hasegawa book. They carry Hasegawa addresses during the 1889-1890 period (No. 2 Minami Saegicho & 3 Maruya-cho). They are bound Western style with the spine covered (no stab or string ties visible). They are identical in size and format to the books produced specially for Griffith, Farran & Company, London around 1888. More information on that special printing is here. The main difference is that these books do not carry the Griffith, Farran & Company imprint. I believe that these books were produced and marketed to Europe at approximately the same time. These books represent very early publication of the first eighteen Japanese fairy tale books (English) in the crepe paper format. These books are uniform in size and in the binding technique used. They are a matching set. While the colophons show publications dates ranging from 1885 (Meiji 18) through 1889 (Meiji 22), I believe they were issued as a set ca 1889 which was the year of publication of No 18, the last book in the unit.
